|Titles||Earless of Trellheim|
|First Appearance||Pawn of Prophecy|
Barak had fallen in love with her when they were children, but because of her superior rank she spurned him. When Barak was created the Earl of Trellheim, her family forced the marriage on her in order to gain political advantage. She resented Barak for the situation and did many things to spite him. Barak, in turn, came to see that the Merel of his imagination was far removed from the Merel of reality. Their marriage was loveless, and Barak tried to spend as much time as possible away from home.
The marriage had already produced two daughters (Gundred and Terzie), but it was not until after the birth of their son Unrak that Barak and Merel - perhaps informed by maturity - began to realise that they did in fact love each other, leading to a considerable warming of their relationship.
Lady Merel, however, remained stony-faced, her expression faintly contemptuous as she looked at her husband. -Pawn of Prophecy
